7 Reasons Behind Your Blowing Cold Air & How To Fix Them

When the crisp winter air rolls in, all we want is a warm, cozy home. That’s why furnace tune-ups in North Salt Lake become so popular this time of year. But what happens when your furnace starts pushing out cold air instead of heat?

There are several possible causes—some minor and easy to fix, others requiring professional help. Here are the seven most common reasons your furnace may be blowing cold air, along with what you can do about them.

7 Reasons Furnace is Blowing Cold Air

1. Clogged Air Filters

Check your furnace’s air filter. If it’s caked with dust, grease, or soot, airflow is restricted. This can cause overheating, which often leads to the system blowing cold air. The solution is simple—replace the dirty filter with a clean one. Furnace experts in Layton recommend swapping filters every 90 days to prevent these issues.

2. Damaged Pilot Light

The pilot light’s job is to ignite the burners so the furnace can produce heat. If it’s not working:

  • Switch the furnace’s reset toggle to OFF to shut off the gas.
  • Wait a few minutes to let excess gas clear.
  • Move the reset toggle to Pilot and hold it down.
  • Place a lit match near the pilot opening.
  • Once the flame catches, release the reset button.

This should relight the pilot and restore heat.

3. Dirty Flame Sensor

The flame sensor detects heat to confirm a successful burn cycle. If it’s covered in dirt or buildup, the furnace may shut down prematurely and blow cold air. Cleaning the sensor usually solves the problem quickly.

4. Clogged Condensate Lines

Your furnace’s condensate or drain lines remove excess moisture. When they’re blocked, the burners can shut down, leaving you with cold air instead of heat. Clearing the line will typically get things running again.

5. Wrong Thermostat Settings

If the thermostat is set to ON, your furnace’s blower will run continuously—even when the burners aren’t heating. Switch the setting to AUTO so the blower only runs during active heating cycles.

6. Low or Empty Gas Supply

Without sufficient gas, the furnace can’t generate heat. If this is the issue, only a licensed professional can safely repair or restore the gas line.

7. Damaged Ductwork

Leaks or holes in your ducts allow warm air to escape before it reaches your rooms. Sealing or repairing ductwork will restore efficiency and ensure more consistent heating.
