Quick answer
Yes, Blue Best installs cold-climate, dual-fuel, and ductless heat pumps across Utah, serving the Wasatch Front and beyond. We size the system for your home and its elevation. Our cold-climate models are tested at 5°F by the ENERGY STAR program. Before quoting, we check your electrical system. We show your options in a written quote. We pull the permit. At commissioning, the refrigerant charge is weighed, and the dual-fuel switchover is set.
Signs a heat pump fits your home
Air conditioner aging
A heat pump replaces both your air conditioner and heater in one unit. We check whether your current air conditioner is due for replacement.
Gas furnace still good
A dual-fuel system keeps your existing gas furnace and pairs it with a heat pump. We check whether your furnace is in good shape.
Room without ducts
A ductless heat pump serves a single room or an addition without ductwork. We check whether that space needs its own system.
Electric baseboard heat
Electric baseboard heat is expensive to run. We check whether a heat pump can replace it for lower operating cost.
Shoulder season chill
A house that feels cold in spring and fall may benefit from a heat pump's steady heating. We check whether your home fits that pattern.
One unit for both
A heat pump provides cooling in summer and heating in winter from one system. We check whether that setup works for your home.
Solar later
A heat pump pairs well with solar panels for efficient electric heating and cooling. We check whether you plan to add solar in the future.
Cold nights at home
A cold-climate heat pump keeps a house warm even on cold nights. We check whether your home has that need.
Another quote to check
We give a free second opinion on any competitor's replacement quote. We check whether you have a heat pump quote you want reviewed.
Do heat pumps work in Utah winters?
At the Salt Lake City airport, heating degree days total 5,154 and cooling degree days total 1,420. January lows average about 24°F. Cold-climate heat pumps are tested down to 5°F and keep working below that temperature. They deliver up to three times the heat energy per unit of electricity. A gas furnace serves as backup.
Cold-climate standard
The ENERGY STAR cold-climate designation requires capacity at 5°F of 70 percent or more of the 47°F rating. Efficiency at 5°F must show a coefficient of performance of 1.75 or higher. Units are third-party tested down to 5°F. NEEP maintains a separate cold-climate list. These systems use variable-capacity compressors.[1]
Efficiency ratings
The federal minimum for split heat pumps is 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. ENERGY STAR certifies 15.2 SEER2 and 7.8 HSPF2. Non-ducted cold-climate units must reach 8.5 HSPF2; ducted cold-climate units require 8.1 HSPF2. Certification applies to the indoor and outdoor pair.[2]
Dual-fuel operation
The heat pump and gas furnace alternate by outdoor temperature and thermostat setting. The heat pump runs most of the year. The furnace runs 5 to 30 percent of the time. Adding a heat pump to a furnace involves a modest extra cost compared with an air conditioner. Dual-fuel capable furnaces require a dual-fuel kit.[3]
Refrigerant and code
New systems use refrigerants under 700 GWP. EPA lists R-454B and R-32, class A2L. Utah law requires a licensed HVAC contractor. Permits are required in Salt Lake City, Davis County, Ogden, and West Valley City.[4]

Which heat pump setup fits your home?
Each home has different needs, so here is how the three options compare.
Cold-climate heat pump alone
- ✓Best for: Homes with an existing electric or propane backup.
- ✓Tested at 5°F and keeps at least 70 percent capacity; backup heat handles the coldest nights
Dual-fuel pairing with a gas furnace
- ✓Best for: Homes that already have a gas furnace.
- ✓Alternates by outdoor temperature using a dual-fuel kit; your existing furnace stays paired with the heat pump
Ductless mini-split
- ✓Best for: Rooms without ducts or additions.
- ✓Rated 8.5 HSPF2 cold-climate by the ENERGY STAR program; all three setups are sized for the home and rebate paperwork is filed where a program applies

Is a heat pump right for your Utah home?
Cold-climate models are tested at 5°F by the ENERGY STAR program. We keep your existing furnace as backup where it fits. We provide a written quote and tell you when something else fits the house better.
What does a proper heat pump installation deliver?
Three times the heat
An ENERGY STAR certified heat pump can deliver up to three times the heat energy per unit of electricity it uses. Your system is sized for the home.
Cold-weather performance
An ENERGY STAR cold-climate model keeps at least 70 percent of its capacity at 5°F and continues working below that temperature. We choose a cold-climate model where the load calls for one.
Dual-fuel switchover
The switchover by outdoor temperature is set at commissioning. The furnace handles the coldest nights, and the heat pump runs the rest of the heating season.
Matched indoor and outdoor pair
An ENERGY STAR certification requires the indoor and outdoor units to be tested and certified as a pair. We quote matched equipment.
Manufacturer warranty coverage
Lennox parts carry a 5-year base warranty and 10 years with registration within 60 days. Amana parts carry 5 years unregistered and 10 years registered within 60 days. We register your warranty for you.
Thermostat set for the heat pump
The thermostat is configured for the heat pump. An ENERGY STAR heat pump needs a thermostat built for heat pumps, set to a fixed mode - heat or cool, not auto - in spring and fall.
What installation problems do we solve?
A furnace worth keeping
A heat pump and your existing gas furnace can alternate as a dual-fuel setup. We pair them using a dual-fuel kit where one fits, keeping your furnace instead of replacing it.
A room without ducts
A non-ducted cold-climate heat pump with 8.5 HSPF2 serves a single room. We install a ductless head where ducts cannot reach that space.
The electrical service
We check your electrical panel and wiring before quoting. Wire size must meet the electrical code, and we quote any circuit work up front.
The wrong thermostat
A heat pump needs a thermostat built for it. We identify your backup heat source and configure or replace the thermostat to match.
Elevation
Salt Lake City airport sits at about 4,225 feet and Provo at about 4,570 feet. The sizing standard includes an altitude appendix, and we size for it.
An old air conditioner's line set
R-410A units cannot be retrofitted to newer refrigerants. A new system uses refrigerant under 700 GWP, and we assess the line set, replacing it when needed.
What drives the price of a heat pump install?
We give you a written quote with options shown. Where it fits, we keep your existing gas furnace. We check your duct and electrical condition before we give you a number. There is no expiring-tonight pressure. We publish the drivers that set the price. Blue Best quotes an exact price in writing before any work begins.
The price drivers are backup heat, the cold-climate tier, duct condition, electrical work, and the setup. We file rebate paperwork where a program applies and offer a free second opinion on any competitor's replacement quote.

What does Blue Best guarantee in writing?
On new equipment installs
a 1-year labor warranty - extendable for customers on a Blue Best Maintenance Plan - the parts warranty (typically 10 years on qualifying Lennox and Amana equipment) registered for you, and no-lemon coverage on major components like compressors and heat exchangers.
On any quoted work
the price you sign is the price you pay - change orders require your approval before we do the work. Plus a free second opinion on any competitor's replacement quote (no blanket price-match - sometimes our honest answer is "take their deal").
What we won't promise
real-world comfort depends on duct condition, insulation, and infiltration, so we disclose those dependencies rather than guarantee a number. The 5.0 rating from 2,900+ reviews is the audit trail.
Questions About Heat Pump Installation
Yes. Cold-climate models are tested down to 5°F and keep working below that temperature. At 5°F, they deliver at least 70 percent of their rated capacity. January lows at the airport average about 24°F, well within that range.
A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with a gas furnace. They alternate based on outdoor temperature and thermostat setting. The heat pump runs most of the year, covering 70 to 95 percent of heating needs. A manufacturer's dual-fuel kit is used, and Blue Best sets the switchover point at commissioning.
It includes a duct and electrical check, the matched pair of equipment, permit and inspection, haul-away of the old unit, and full commissioning. Commissioning covers refrigerant charge, airflow, switchover, and thermostat configuration. The manufacturer's warranty is registered.
Manual J is the industry standard for sizing heating and cooling equipment. Building codes require load calculations to ensure proper sizing. When a unit is too large or too small, comfort suffers. Manual S is the companion standard for selecting the correct equipment.
Sometimes. Blue Best files rebate paperwork where a program applies. Programs vary by utility and equipment. ENERGY STAR certified models qualify where a program requires one. Ask when you call about your specific situation.
A heat pump runs all winter, so the outdoor unit sits on a raised pad or wall bracket above the usual snow depth, with open space around it. That keeps snow and drifts from blocking airflow and lets defrost water drain away. Many HOAs also have rules on where outdoor equipment can go. On a dual-fuel system, the outdoor temperature sensor goes where it reads true outdoor air, out of direct sun.
Call for service if the system runs but blows lukewarm air on a cold day, if the breaker trips when it starts, or if it turns on and off every few minutes. A sudden jump in your winter electric bill can also mean the backup heat is carrying the load because the heat pump is not keeping up.
The ENERGY STAR program requires a coefficient of performance of at least 1.75 at 5°F and at least 70 percent of the 47°F rating. Units are third-party tested. NEEP publishes a separate cold-climate list. These models use variable-capacity compressors to maintain efficiency in low temperatures.
ENERGY STAR lists non-ducted cold-climate models at 8.5 HSPF2 and ducted models at 8.1 HSPF2. Ductless units work well for rooms without ducts. Blue Best performs a duct check first. Both options are sized for your home.
Backup heat is a secondary heat source. In a dual-fuel system, the gas furnace serves that role, running 5 to 30 percent of the year. It can also be electric resistance or a furnace. The thermostat must identify it. Blue Best will advise which option fits your home.
Lennox offers 5 years on parts base, extended to 10 years with registration within 60 days. Amana offers 5 years unregistered and 10 years registered within 60 days. Blue Best registers your warranty and provides a 1-year labor warranty on installs.
Yes. In cold, damp weather, frost builds up on the outdoor coil, and the heat pump runs a short defrost cycle to melt it. The steam you see is that frost melting off. A thin coat of frost that clears after a defrost cycle is normal. A thick layer of ice that stays on the coil is not, and needs a service visit.
Under about 10 years old, repair usually makes sense; only a major failure, like the compressor on a base unit, changes that. From 10 to 15 years, a major repair approaching half the cost of a new system deserves a written comparison. Past 15 years, or on an older R-22 system with a sealed-system failure, replacement usually wins. We put both options in writing, including a cold-climate or dual-fuel upgrade.
Twice a year: a spring check for cooling and a fall check for heating, because a heat pump works in both seasons. Its outdoor coil also collects dust all year, so on dusty or windy lots, keep the coil clean and check it more often. Our maintenance plan includes two tune-ups a year.
Heat pump terms, plain and simple
Heat pump
A single outdoor unit that moves heat instead of burning fuel, providing both cooling and heating for your home.
Cold-climate heat pump
A heat pump tested at 5°F that still delivers at least 70 percent of its rated heating capacity in that cold.
Coefficient of performance
The heat output per unit of electricity input, with a cold-climate designation requiring at least 1.75 at 5°F.
HSPF2
The seasonal heating efficiency rating that tells you how well a heat pump performs over an entire heating season.
Dual-fuel
A heat pump paired with a gas furnace, where the system switches between them by temperature for best efficiency.
Ductless mini-split
An outdoor unit connected to one or more wall or ceiling heads, delivering heating and cooling without any ducts.
Backup heat
A gas furnace or electric resistance strips that provide heat on the coldest nights when the heat pump alone is not enough.
Variable-capacity compressor
A compressor that adjusts its output to match demand, running at three or more speeds for steady comfort.
Reversing valve
The valve that switches a heat pump between heating and cooling by sending the refrigerant the other way around the system.
SEER2
The cooling efficiency rating used since 2023. Its test runs at higher duct pressure than the old SEER test, so the same unit scores a little lower in SEER2.
AHRI certificate
A record in the AHRI directory that lists the certified ratings for one specific pairing of indoor and outdoor units, so a quoted system can be checked.
