Book Your Generator Service
Quick answer
Yes, we service and repair standby generators of any major brand across Utah. A yearly service visit includes an oil and oil filter change, air filter replacement, new spark plugs, a valve clearance check, and a load test per the manufacturer's manual. If your generator won't start, that call gets priority, and same-day service is usually available, subject to scheduling. We provide the price in writing before any work begins.
How can you tell your generator needs service?
Missed self-test
You notice the generator did not run its weekly self-test. We check the controller and the unit's log to see what happened.
Fault light on
Alight is showing on the control panel. We check the indicator and the controller to understand what it means.
Cranks but won't start
You hear the engine turning over but it does not fire up. We check the fuel supply and the starting system.
Fuel or exhaust smell
You smell fuel or exhaust fumes near the unit when it is not running. We check for leaks and proper ventilation.
A year without service
It has been more than a year since the last maintenance visit. We perform an annual service with a load test.
Old battery
The generator struggles to crank or the battery appears corroded. We check the battery condition and the charging system.
Nests or snow at the unit
You see debris, nests, or snow buildup around or inside the enclosure. We clear the area and check for blockages.
Changed engine sound
The generator sounds different than usual when it runs. We listen to the engine and check the operating conditions.
Unknown service history
You do not know when or if the unit was last serviced. We inspect the system and perform a full service check.
Why does a standby generator need yearly service?
A standby generator runs a self-test every week and sits outdoors year-round. The manufacturer's manual lists service intervals by hours or calendar, whichever comes first. The manufacturer's warranty excludes maintenance items like oil, filters, plugs, and batteries. Yearly service addresses these items.
What gets checked yearly
The manual's yearly or 100-hour items include air filter, breaker torques, oil and oil filter, oil-cooler fins, spark plugs, and valve clearance. The manual also calls for a daily or every-8-hours check of oil and clearing debris.[1]
How the self-test works
The spec sheet says the weekly exercise cycle runs 16 seconds by default. It is programmable up to 20 minutes and replaced a 5-to-20-minute test. It is quieter and uses less fuel. The unit is air-cooled, so there is no coolant service.[2]
What the warranty covers
The warranty provides 7-year parts, labor, and travel, with 10 years on DX models. Non-emergency use is limited to 1,000 hours. It excludes oil, filters, spark plugs, and batteries. The warranty is void unless there is a licensed installation.[3]
Carbon monoxide safety
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that stationary units have caused carbon monoxide incidents, including 105 homes after Hurricane Ida. As of June 2025, the CPSC recommends 25 feet from openings, though this is a recommendation, not adopted code. The CPSC also recommends carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas.[4]

What does yearly service give you?
Oil and filter change
Fresh oil is installed using 5W-30 full synthetic only, as specified in the manual. The oil and oil filter are changed yearly.
Air filter and plugs
The manual calls for a new air filter, spark plugs, and a valve clearance check yearly or every 100 hours.
Battery check
The starting battery is tested. The manual specifies a 12-volt battery with 540 cold-cranking amps, or 800 where it drops below 30°F.
Load test
A full load test is performed beyond the weekly self-test. The spec sheet says the default test runs for 16 seconds.
Warranty protection
The manufacturer's warranty covers 7 years parts, labor, and travel, but maintenance items are excluded. Oil, filters, plugs, and batteries are your responsibility.
Remote monitoring
The plus model has app and dealer alerts built in. The standard model requires an accessory, and a subscription is required.
What generator problems do we repair?
Won't start
The starting battery is a 12-volt lead-acid battery rated at 540 cold-cranking amps per the manual. We test and replace it.
Oil issues
The manual says to check oil every 8 hours or daily. Use 5W-30 full synthetic only; an 18–26 kW unit takes about 78 to 80 ounces, a 13 kW takes 48 ounces. We change oil and filter.
Failed self-test
The spec sheet shows a weekly exercise cycle. The default runs 16 seconds, programmable up to 20 minutes. We read the controller and reset the schedule.
Transfer switch trouble
The manual states transfer in 33 seconds. The spec sheet says break-before-make, UL 1008 listed. We test the transfer under load.
Debris and pests
The manual says to clear debris, maintain 18 inches rear clearance, and keep 5 feet from windows, doors, and vents. We clear and inspect the enclosure.
Fuel supply problems
The manual specifies natural gas at 3.5 to 7 inches water column, propane at 11 to 14 inches, measured at full load with every other gas appliance running. We measure gas pressure.
What makes generator service prices vary?
We give you a flat, written price before any work starts. What you pay depends on what your generator needs, not on guesswork. We publish what moves the price so you know exactly where your money goes. Blue Best quotes an exact price in writing before any work begins.
The final figure depends on the unit's size and brand, what the diagnosis finds, and parts needed. Members get savings on service and priority scheduling.
Quoted upfront
Annual load test - A full system check under real power to confirm readiness.
Quoted upfront
Diagnostic visit - Finding the cause of a fault or a won't-start condition.
Quoted upfront
Parts replacement - Battery, plugs, filters, and oil as your unit requires.

What does Blue Best guarantee in writing?
On new equipment installs
a 1-year labor warranty - extendable for customers on a Blue Best Maintenance Plan - the parts warranty (typically 10 years on qualifying Lennox and Amana equipment) registered for you, and no-lemon coverage on major components like compressors and heat exchangers.
On any quoted work
the price you sign is the price you pay - change orders require your approval before we do the work. Plus a free second opinion on any competitor's replacement quote (no blanket price-match - sometimes our honest answer is "take their deal").
What we won't promise
real-world comfort depends on duct condition, insulation, and infiltration, so we disclose those dependencies rather than guarantee a number. The 5.0 rating from 2,900+ reviews is the audit trail.
