Is a standby generator right for your home?
A furnace that stops
When the power goes, your furnace stops too. A standby generator keeps it running so your home stays warm.
Medical equipment at home
If you rely on medical devices, an outage is a serious risk. A standby unit powers that equipment without interruption.
A sump pump
Without power, your sump pump cannot run. A standby generator keeps it working to help protect your basement.
Long absences from the house
When you are away, an outage can cause problems you won't discover until you return. A standby unit protects your home while you are gone.
Tired of a portable unit
Portables need fuel, extension cords, and setup each time. A standby generator starts automatically and connects directly to your home.
A freezer of food
A full freezer stays cold for only so long. A standby generator keeps it running so your food does not spoil.
Working from home
An outage stops your internet and your equipment. A standby generator keeps you online and working.
A well pump
Without power, your well pump cannot deliver water. A standby generator keeps water flowing to your home.
A canyon-mouth or bench home
These homes often face unique exposure to weather. A standby generator gives you power when conditions affect your area.
Why do Utah homes add backup power?
Utah power is reliable most years, with federal energy data from 2024 showing 115 minutes out per customer compared to 663 minutes nationally. The exceptions are canyon-wind storms and wet-snow storms. A standby unit is permanent and starts by itself.
The Wasatch wind threat
The National Weather Service describes "Wasatch wind" as a strong easterly wind out of canyon mouths. The September 7–8, 2020 windstorm brought gusts of 99 mph at Farmington and 112 mph at the University of Utah. Rocky Mountain Power's filings show 373,674 customers affected.[1]
The wet-snow record
Federal energy data for 2024 shows Utah at 115 minutes per customer with 1.008 interruptions per customer, compared to 663 minutes and 1.531 interruptions nationally. The March 29, 2019 wet snow left more than 19,000 customers out.[2]
Backfeed is preventable
Rocky Mountain Power states a transfer switch prevents backfeed onto utility lines. Never plug a generator into a wall outlet. OSHA requires a transfer switch installed by a qualified electrician.[3]
Manufacturer installation terms
The manufacturer requires installation by licensed professionals or the warranty is void. Their four dealer steps are consultation, site assessment, installation with permits, and start-up. The manual states the installer supplies the battery, wire and conduit, and fuel valves and piping.[4]

Not every home needs a standby unit. Sometimes a portable unit fits better. Sometimes a smaller essential-circuits system is the right choice. We say so. We offer a free second opinion and perform a load calculation to help you decide.
Which backup option fits your home?
Here is how the three main choices compare for your home.
Whole-home standby
- ✓Best for: Powering everything in your house automatically.
- ✓A permanent unit outdoors connected to your gas line with an automatic transfer switch.
Essential-circuits standby (managed loads)
- ✓Best for: Running key appliances without a full-house panel.
- ✓Uses automatic load management to run up to eight high-draw items per the manufacturer.
Portable generator
- ✓Best for: A lower-cost, movable power source.
- ✓Runs on gasoline, wheeled out and connected by cords or a manual switch; must stay outdoors at least 20 feet from the house and never in a garage per the CPSC.
For larger jobs - including generator installs - we offer financing on qualifying installations, subject to credit approval[5]. Note: the federal 25C/25D energy credits do not cover standby generators, and they ended December 31, 2025 regardless - anyone promising you a 2026 federal generator credit is working from bad information.

What does a properly installed standby system deliver?
Automatic transfer
A standby generator starts itself when the power goes out. The manual says the transfer happens in 33 seconds. No one needs to be home for it to work.
Weekly self-test
The unit runs a self-test every week. The default test lasts 16 seconds. A monitoring app and dealer alerts are available; the plus model has them built in, the standard model needs an accessory with a subscription.
Sized to your home
The system is sized by a load calculation. The electrical code allows full load or load management. The manufacturer permits up to eight managed appliances.
Seven-year warranty
The manufacturer provides a 7-year parts, labor, and travel warranty. DX models get 10 years. The warranty is registered for you.
Runs on gas
The generator runs on your home's gas line. There is no refueling needed. It converts to propane with a lever.
Annual service offered
Annual service and load testing are offered. The manual calls for yearly oil, filters, and plugs.
What installation problems do we solve?
Gas supply checks
We verify gas pressure per the manual at full generator load with every other gas appliance running, measuring 3.5 to 7 inches water column for natural gas. A 26 kW unit needs 323 cubic feet per hour. We check your meter and line capacity.
Placement requirements
We set clearances per the manual: 5 feet overhead, 18 inches rear, 3 feet at front and ends, 5 feet from windows, doors, and vents, and 10 feet from air-conditioner intakes. The site must be flat with water draining away.
Transfer switch matching
The manufacturer offers 100, 150, 200, and dual 200 amp transfer switches, sold separately. We match the switch to your electrical panel and size it to code.
Elevation adjustments
The manufacturer specifies an altitude derate of 3.5% per 1,000 feet. Bountiful sits at about 4,300 feet. We size the unit for your elevation.
Cold weather operation
The standard model operates to −20°F. The plus model has a 30°F floor without a cold-weather kit and reaches −20°F with the kit. The manual requires an 800 cold-cranking-amp battery below 30°F.
Permit handling
Davis County requires a permit for any gas, electrical, mechanical, or plumbing work. Ogden requires a permit to install or alter electrical or gas systems. Salt Lake City requires separate electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permits. Utah law requires a licensed electrical contractor for electrical work. We pull the permits and coordinate inspection.
What drives the cost of a standby generator install?
We give every customer a flat-rate price in writing before any work begins. To help you understand what goes into that number, here are the main factors that move it. Blue Best quotes an exact price in writing before any work begins.
The final figure depends on the load backed up, placement, gas and electrical work, and distance from meter and panel. Blue Best offers financing on qualifying installations, subject to credit approval.
Quoted free
Site assessment - No-charge, no-obligation visit and load calculation.

What does Blue Best guarantee in writing?
On new equipment installs
a 1-year labor warranty - extendable for customers on a Blue Best Maintenance Plan - the parts warranty (typically 10 years on qualifying Lennox and Amana equipment) registered for you, and no-lemon coverage on major components like compressors and heat exchangers.
On any quoted work
the price you sign is the price you pay - change orders require your approval before we do the work. Plus a free second opinion on any competitor's replacement quote (no blanket price-match - sometimes our honest answer is "take their deal").
What we won't promise
real-world comfort depends on duct condition, insulation, and infiltration, so we disclose those dependencies rather than guarantee a number. The 5.0 rating from 2,900+ reviews is the audit trail.
Questions homeowners ask about standby generators
We handle the entire installation from start to finish. The process begins with a consultation and a site assessment by a licensed technician. We then complete the installation, which includes pulling all necessary permits. We supply the battery, wire and conduit, and all fuel valves and piping. The job finishes with a start-up and a full load test.
The manual specifies 3 feet of clearance at the front and ends, 5 feet from windows, doors, and vents, and 18 inches of rear clearance. It must be 10 feet from air-conditioner intakes and have 5 feet of overhead clearance. The site must be flat with water draining away. A concrete pad is not required unless the code or wind rating calls for one.
The manufacturer offers transfer switches in 100, 150, 200, and dual 200 amp sizes. They are outdoor-rated with a NEMA 3R enclosure and are UL 1008 listed. The switch is sold separately from the generator. The standard switch warranty is 7 years, and one 200-amp model carries a 10-year warranty. We size the switch to match your electrical panel.
The manufacturer applies an altitude derate of 3.5% per 1,000 feet. Bountiful sits at about 4,300 feet. The standard model operates from −20°F to 104°F. The plus model has a 30°F floor without the cold-weather kit but can run at −20°F with that kit. The manual specifies an 800 cold-cranking-amp battery for temperatures below 30°F.
Yes. We offer financing on qualifying installations, subject to credit approval. There is no federal energy credit available for standby generators. Please ask about financing options when you call.
Utah law requires construction trades to be licensed. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrical contractor, and gas appliance work requires a licensed or certified person. The manufacturer's warranty is void unless a licensed installation is performed. We are a licensed Utah contractor, and our work is done by our own W-2 employees and licensed subcontractors.
It depends. The manual requires 3.5 to 7 inches of water column at full generator load with every other gas appliance running. The 26 kW unit uses 323 cubic feet per hour at full load. We check your meter and gas line capacity to confirm it is adequate. Our local gas utility is Enbridge Gas (formerly Dominion Energy).
Yes, we handle all electrical and gas permits. We pull the permits and coordinate the required inspection. In Davis County, inspections are scheduled with the county. In Bountiful, permits are obtained through its online portal. In West Valley City, the city authorizes power after the inspection is passed.
The manufacturer provides a 7-year warranty covering parts, labor, and travel. DX models have a 10-year warranty. The enclosure is covered for 1 year against surface rust and 3 years against rust-through. The warranty excludes oil, filters, plugs, and batteries. We register the warranty for you and add our own 1-year labor warranty on installations.
