Ecobee vs. Nest—What We Like About Ecobee

When it comes to smart thermostats here along the Wasatch Front, Ecobee and Nest are the leading contenders. After spending significant time with both, we’ve noticed several shared features—as well as a few key distinctions. If you’re considering a thermostat upgrade, here’s what to keep in mind.

Similarities

Ecobee and Nest share a number of core features:

  • Both connect via Wi-Fi, allowing you to control your settings directly from your smartphone.
  • Each has a sleek design with a modern digital display.
  • Both support geofencing, which uses your smartphone’s location to determine whether you're home. When you’re away, the system will allow your indoor temperature to fluctuate slightly, reducing energy use. Once you return, it will automatically revert to your preferred comfort settings.
  • Each lets you set custom temperature ranges and will engage your furnace or air conditioner tune-up if the home becomes too cold or too warm.

Differences

A standout difference between Ecobee and Nest is their wiring requirements. While most thermostats operate with four wires, the Nest often needs five—something that catches many DIY installers by surprise and leads to unexpected service calls to Blue Best Plumbing, Heating, Air, & Generators. The Ecobee, on the other hand, typically only needs four wires, making it more straightforward for most homeowners to install.

Another advantage of Ecobee is the inclusion of a remote temperature sensor with many of its models. (With Nest, these sensors are an extra purchase.) This feature allows you to monitor temperatures in different areas of your home. For example, if your thermostat is located in your main living space but your basement tends to stay cooler, you can place the sensor downstairs and have your furnace kick on when the basement drops below your comfort level.

Lastly, the Ecobee’s touch-screen interface often makes it more user-friendly. While the Nest is operated through a rotating dial and button presses on the device itself, Ecobee allows direct access to settings right on the screen.
