Some AC problems can be resolved with simple DIY steps, while others may require a visit from a professional. Let’s walk through some of the most common reasons your system may not be cooling effectively—and what to do next.
1. Dirty Air Filters
Clogged or dirty air filters are one of the most common reasons your AC stops cooling properly. Filters should be cleaned or replaced regularly to allow unrestricted airflow through your system. Ideally, you should change your filters every 1 to 3 months—and more frequently if you have pets or someone in the home with asthma or allergies.
A simple test is to remove the filter and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see through it, it’s time for a replacement. Dirty filters restrict airflow, forcing your AC to work harder and reducing its ability to cool your home effectively.
2. Lacking Airflow
Blocked airflow can also reduce your system’s ability to cool a space. If vents or air handlers are obstructed by furniture, curtains, or other objects, the cold air won’t circulate properly. Also, if there aren’t enough air handlers in a given room, the system may not be able to cool that zone efficiently. Rearranging furniture or considering the addition of more air handlers could help solve the issue.
3. Condenser Not Clear
Your outdoor condenser unit needs adequate space and airflow to function correctly. Leaves, weeds, and other debris can build up around the unit, reducing efficiency. Make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around the condenser on all sides.
If it’s been sitting unused since last season, give the area a good cleaning. Trim back any overgrown plants and clear away any materials that could block airflow to the coils or fan.
4. Thermostat Malfunctioning
Sometimes the problem lies with the thermostat itself. First, double-check your settings. If it’s set to fan mode, the system will circulate air without cooling it—making your home feel warmer and more humid. On particularly humid days, using the auto mode may still circulate moisture when the compressor shuts off.
If the temperature reading seems off, the thermostat may need recalibration. Smart thermostats can also display incorrect readings if disconnected from Wi-Fi or if there's a sensor issue. A quick reboot might resolve the problem, but if not, give us a call to inspect and test your thermostat.
5. Refrigerant Line Issue
Low refrigerant is another common reason for weak cooling. If there's a leak in the refrigerant line, your system may lose pressure, making it difficult to absorb and transfer heat. You might notice warm air coming from the vents or hear a faint hissing sound, which could indicate a leak.
This is not a DIY fix—refrigerant handling requires EPA-certified professionals. Our team at Blue Best Plumbing, Heating, Air, & Generators can diagnose the issue, repair the leak, and recharge your refrigerant levels to restore cooling performance.
6. Ducts Need Cleaning
Dirty or clogged air ducts can also impair your system’s ability to cool effectively. When debris builds up inside your ductwork, airflow becomes restricted, and the cooled air may struggle to reach your living areas. You might also notice a spread of allergens or dust throughout the home.
If it’s been more than three to five years since your last duct cleaning, it may be time to schedule a professional service. Our HVAC specialists use specialized equipment to clear debris and improve your system’s airflow and air quality.
