HVAC Monitoring: How To Preserve Your Shore Home In The Winter

For your HVAC system to operate efficiently and last for years, routine maintenance is essential. Neglecting upkeep causes your air conditioner’s performance to decline, raises energy usage, and can eventually lead to costly repairs.

Air Conditioner Filters

The most important step in maintaining your AC’s efficiency is cleaning or replacing its filters regularly—ideally once a month. Dirty or clogged filters block airflow, forcing the system to work harder while reducing efficiency. Blocked airflow also allows dirt to bypass the filter and coat the evaporator coil, limiting its ability to absorb heat.

Filters are usually installed along the return ducts, inside walls or ceilings, or directly within the air conditioner itself. Some filters are reusable, while others must be replaced. They come in different sizes and efficiency levels. During the cooling season, check and change filters every month or two. Homes with pets, heavy AC use, or dusty conditions may require even more frequent care. If you notice unusual noises, it’s best to contact HVAC services in Layton before the issue worsens.

Air Conditioner Coils

Over time, dirt builds up on the evaporator and condenser coils. A clean filter helps keep the evaporator coil from getting dirty as quickly, but it should still be inspected yearly and cleaned when needed. This simple step ensures your system can continue to absorb and transfer heat efficiently.

Coil Fins

The aluminum fins on evaporator and condenser coils can bend easily, which restricts airflow. To fix this, HVAC supply stores sell a tool called a “fin comb” that straightens them back into place and restores proper air circulation.

Window Seals for Room Air Conditioners

At the start of each cooling season, inspect the seal between your window unit and the frame. The seal should make full contact with the air conditioner’s metal case. Over time, moisture can cause the seal to deteriorate, allowing cooled air to leak out.

Preparing for Winter

Before winter arrives, either remove your window air conditioner and store it or cover it to protect it from cold weather and debris. For central air systems, covering the outdoor unit during the off-season helps shield it from winter conditions and extend its lifespan.
