The Components of a Heat Pump
A standard heat pump setup consists of three primary components: the outdoor condenser unit, refrigerant lines, and one or more indoor air handlers. These parts work in sync to provide both heating and cooling capabilities throughout your home.
Ducted vs. Ductless Heat Pumps
When selecting a heat pump system, you’ll have the choice between ducted and ductless options. Ducted systems connect to your home’s existing ductwork and typically require just one indoor air handler to distribute conditioned air.
Ductless mini-split systems, on the other hand, operate without ductwork. Instead, each room gets its own wall-mounted air handler, which delivers hot or cold air directly from the unit’s blower. These systems are especially useful for homes without ducts or for targeting specific rooms.
Choosing the Right Heat Pump System
Once you’ve decided on a heat pump, your next step is to consult an HVAC professional. They’ll help determine the best system type and ensure your home is fitted with the correct size unit(s). For ductless systems, one of our technicians will assess the needs of each room to recommend the appropriate mini-split size.
Getting the right size is critical: oversized units may short cycle and waste energy, while undersized ones will struggle to meet your comfort needs.
What to Expect on Installation Day
After selecting your system, we’ll schedule an installation date. Most heat pump installations are completed in a single day, typically taking between 4 and 8 hours, depending on the size and layout of your home.
Removal of Old HVAC Equipment
The first step is removing your existing HVAC components. Because a heat pump handles both heating and cooling, your current system will no longer be needed. Our technicians will disconnect it from fuel, electrical, and duct connections and safely remove it from your property—disposal included.
Ductwork Inspection and Repair
If you’re going with a ducted heat pump, we’ll inspect your home’s ductwork before proceeding. Leaky or damaged ducts can significantly reduce system efficiency, so we’ll make any necessary repairs or replacements to ensure optimal airflow and prevent energy loss.
Installing the Outdoor Condenser Unit
Next, we’ll set up the outdoor condenser. This unit should be placed in a shaded, obstruction-free area—ideally not on the south-facing side—to avoid overheating from direct sunlight.
To keep it stable and level, we’ll install it on either a concrete pad or a stone paver, creating a solid foundation for proper operation.
Refrigerant Line Installation
The refrigerant lines are what allow your heat pump to transfer heat in and out of your home. Ducted systems use two lines that connect the indoor and outdoor units.
Ductless mini-splits require multiple sets of refrigerant lines—each air handler needs its own pair. For each mini-split, a small 3-inch hole is drilled through the wall to run these lines from the inside to the outside unit.
Indoor Air Handler Unit Installation
For ducted systems, the indoor air handler is installed between the supply and return plenums of your duct system, allowing treated air to flow through your home as needed.
Ductless installations require multiple air handlers, typically mounted on walls near the ceiling for even air distribution. Other options include floor-mounted and ceiling-mounted units, depending on the room’s design. Each handler is connected to refrigerant and electrical lines for full functionality.
Refrigerant Charging
Once all components are installed, we’ll charge the system with refrigerant. This step involves carefully adding refrigerant to the lines and coils—a task that must be performed by a licensed technician due to the hazardous nature of the material.
Testing and Calibration
With refrigerant charged, your system will undergo a full test run. Our team will power up the unit and perform detailed calibrations to ensure every component functions properly. This includes checking for refrigerant pressure, verifying thermostat accuracy, and confirming even airflow from vents or mini-splits.
Proper calibration is required for your heat pump warranty to remain valid, which is why it must be completed by certified HVAC professionals.
