Why Is My HVAC System Making Noise?

Strange noises from your HVAC system can be unsettling, especially if you’re not familiar with what they mean. These systems are meant to quietly maintain comfort, so when they make unexpected sounds, it often signals a deeper issue. Understanding these sounds can help you know when a minor issue needs attention or when it’s time to call a professional right away.

Thwapping Sounds

A "thwapping" noise, much like the sound of a card flicking through bicycle spokes, typically means something is interfering with the blower blades. It could be a foreign object or a bent blade. While not immediately dangerous, it can lead to excess wear on belts and motors, lowering energy efficiency and potentially causing bigger problems. Have it checked out soon, though it's not an emergency.

Clicking Sounds

It’s normal to hear a click when your system starts up, but persistent clicking is a red flag. Ongoing clicking often points to ignition issues, such as dirty burners, a malfunctioning flame sensor, or a defective ignition board. However, it could also signal a faulty fan motor or control panel. If your HVAC system clicks but won’t start, turn it off and call a professional immediately.

Rumbling Noises

A soft woosh or roar at the end of a cycle is normal, but a deep rumbling sound isn’t. This may indicate that fuel is still burning inside the combustion chamber even after the system has turned off, which is a serious safety issue. Shut off your HVAC system and have a technician inspect it right away.

Humming or Buzzing

A light hum is common, but a loud buzzing could be caused by loose components, a refrigerant leak, or a failing motor. It may also be something simple, like a dirty air filter. Because this sound can stem from a wide range of problems—from minor to serious—it’s best to schedule a professional inspection.

Banging, Thumping, or Rattling

These sounds usually mean something is loose in the motor, blower, or ductwork. It could also signal a dirty burner. Rattling could even indicate a cracked heat exchanger, which is dangerous due to potential carbon monoxide leaks. If you hear any of these sounds, shut off your system and call a technician immediately.

Screeching or Squealing

High-pitched screeching or squealing usually signals a problem with a motor bearing or a worn-out belt. While sometimes it just needs lubrication, a broken belt can stop your system from running altogether. Don’t wait—get a professional to inspect it before it leads to a breakdown.

Hissing Noises

Hissing can point to several issues, such as:

  • Leaky refrigerant lines
  • High compressor pressure
  • Leaky air ducts

If the sound continues after the system shuts off, you could be dealing with internal valve issues. Leaky ducts also raise energy bills, lower air quality, and reduce overall efficiency. Any persistent hissing sound should be inspected by a technician.
